TAH stands for Total Abdominal Hysterectomy.
It is a primary surgical procedure used in the management and staging of various gynecological malignancies, including ovarian and endometrial cancers:
- Surgical Context: TAH is typically performed as part of comprehensive surgical staging for both early and advanced-stage disease when fertility preservation is not desired.
- Combination Procedures: It is almost always performed in conjunction with a Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy (BSO), the removal of both ovaries and fallopian tubes.
- Procedure Scope: In addition to TAH/BSO, comprehensive surgical staging for these cancers often involves other procedures such as omentectomy, pelvic and para-aortic lymph node sampling, and peritoneal biopsies.
