Ecchymoses

Ecchymoses are clinical signs of bleeding under the skin, commonly referred to as bruising.

Ecchymoses typically occur as a result of thrombocytopenia, which prevents the blood from clotting properly. Along with petechiae (small red spots), ecchymoses are hallmark physical findings that often lead to a patient’s initial diagnosis.
